Investment in French and foreign music catalogs

Source : CNMlab

"Since 2018, there has been a proliferation of transactions in which investment funds buy catalogs of old or recent musical titles from songwriters or publishers at a premium. These transactions have been widely reported and commented on by the press and music market professionals. Some see them as a natural sign of the economic importance of music; others fear a dangerous financialization of musical creation. Beyond the "sensationalism" associated with famous names and nine-figure sums, what exactly are these operations from a technical and legal point of view? What are the objectives, and what are the possible risks? The aim of this study is to clarify the arrangements used on an international scale, and to consider their possible reception and impact in France."
